Death of social internet in Italy
Wed Oct 5, 2011 3:21:13 pm

Unfortunately, the law does not require an evaluation of the claim by an impartial third judge - the opinion of the person allegedly injured is all that is required, in order to impose such correction to any website.

Hence, anyone who feels offended by any content published on a blog, an online newspaper and, most likely, even on Wikipedia can directly request to publish a "corrected" version, aimed to contradict and disprove the allegedly harmful contents, regardless of the truthfulness of the information deemed as offensive, and its sources.

The Italian version of Wikipedia may be shutting down if DDL intercettazioni becomes law. This will require sites to make "corrections" within 48 hours of a request if content on the site offends someone. Failure to make these "corrections" would result in a €12,000 fine.

This obviously would affect many other sites, including blogstalk. Any site in which the content is not meticulously controlled by a single author/administrator would be at risk of getting fined.

What happens if someone is offended by the correction but not by the original version of a story? That would seem to make the fine inescapable.

That would mean even having a meticulously administered site would not be sufficient. It's the death of the entire Italian internet.

I bet there's some kind of loophole to get around that.

Or this hasn't even occurred to the lawmakers.

Or the Death of the Internet is their plan.

There is probably a loophole that gives immunity to some specially selected sites that are biased in favor of some politician's agenda.

This is really silly. I can understand stating that inaccurate data (verifiable information) should be corrected but two thoughts:

A) 48 hours is not realistic.
B) "Offensive" is too broad and shouldn't be an issue in determining content.

The entry about Jesus offends me. Remove it. *eyeroll*

This is absolutely too vague and silly.
