"I live in Greenpoint"
Thu Nov 10, 2011 3:19:27 am
As I approached the train station, I saw a man who I thought might be homeless. He started asking for money in the usual way.
"Spare some change? Some food to eat?"
I sometimes give money, but I had worked late and wasn't in a good mood. As I walked passed him, he uttered one final plea.
"I live in Greenpoint!"
I don't know much about Greenpoint, but I didn't think that living there would be bad enough to merit sympathy. I was sufficiently amused by this to give him money, but I heard the train coming and hurried down the stairs.

Haha.
Well, it does mean that he is surrounded by hipsters and Polish people. That's a desperate situation sometimes.

Aside from the fact it's a big-ass place, I don't know much about NYC, but I imagine this would be similar to a homeless person here (there are a few) saying he lived in Tortilla Flats. I can see the humor in that.

When I was in Seattle, a homeless man on Broadway Ave. (where many of the homeless congregated) sang the Metallica's "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" a cappella while standing on his head for money.

Never heard of them. You sure you don't mean 'the metallica'?

I think you're right. They were one of of the originators of the 80s thrash scene, along with The Megadeth, The Anthrax, and The Slayer (no relation to Buffy; before her time). They all had rings and when they joined them together, they took the form of a giant leather-and-denim-clad robot that played guitar while Godzilla and Mothra destroyed the city. I'm not high.

There are many street/subway performers in New York, but I haven't seen one that sings upside down.

Yay! I loved this post. I'm very excited that you actually gave him money. That's a really cool thing to do. I ♥ stories about the homeless.
Maybe I'll share one of mine, later.

You'd be surprised the things you've seen after living in Seattle for 12 years.

This might be my favorite statement to take out of context ever.

Mm, I don't think it was his usual thing. He asked for money, so I asked him to do something entertaining. He asked the name of a band I liked and I said Metallica. He did this.
