Books given in love
Mon Dec 12, 2011 3:23:41 am

Michael's mother called me a couple of months ago on accident. I told her about work and how I felt like I was making a difference, but also how I missed Michael and a bunch of other stuff too. His sister messaged me on facebook about a week ago. She said,

"Hey Carolyn!

My mom told me about accidentally calling you the other day, and about how you're teaching Pre-K now. She mentioned that you bought books for your kids, since some of them had never had a book, and she wanted to take some of the money we got from Michael's life insurance (we don't want to keep it for ourselves) and use it to buy them some more books for them for Christmas. I'm starting Grad school in January to become an elementary school librarian, so I especially like this idea!

So if you'd like to do this, just let us know what book you already got for them, and how many students you have, and my mom and I will take care of the rest!

Hope you're doing well, and if you want to get together sometime, I would love to."

I just wanted to share this because it's amazingly selfless of them and I'm amazingly touched. More to follow with updates on how the children react.

You know what would be really cute? A photograph of the kids, holding the books, as a thank you note.

This is so amazing.
I am always in awe of people who can teach kids younger than the first grade, by the way. You guys are saints.

Michael was my first boyfriend, love, and first in most every kind of way. He committed suicide about 2 years ago, but I remain close with his family.

I'm going to start that effort tomorrow when I give them the books. I just picked them all up and we all had a good cry.
