Attempted Identity Theft?
Fri Dec 23, 2011 12:50:25 am
I got a call from someone who supposedly works at a restaurant where I had provided some computer services in July. He asked me for my social security number and said he needed it for taxes. This didn't seem right to me because I was certain that they had paid my corporation instead of paying me directly. I have subsequently verified that I remembered it correctly. Due to my psychological issues with phones, I couldn't think clearly enough to explain this to him. Instead, I said I wasn't comfortable giving such information over the phone. I asked him to send me an email requesting such information and I said that I would reply to it. This is actually less secure, but I wasn't really planning to reply via email. I just needed to get rid of him and get some time to figure out what to do. 7 hours later, he still hasn't sent me an email.

Yep. It's more fun that way.

Several people that I travelled to Guatemala with this year have had money taken out of their bank accounts by someone in Lima, Peru. You were wise to be suspicious and to not give out the info.

you did exactly the right thing. if this had been a tax issue, you can always check this with the IRS.
Also, if you wish to pursue this further, you can contact the Restaurant and ask the manager/HR.
Do you have caller ID? If so you can verify the phone number with the Restaurant. Some companies
here anonymize outgoing call IDs, but then they will still have a log of outgoing calls.
Dunno about the US but here in NL calls are always suspiscious when it concerns tax. These things
are always done via snailmail, probably because stamped letters and printed actual paper are easier
evidence in court.

You should never give your social security number for any business reason. The Corporate number is fine and Social Security will give you an another alias number for business purposes, if you request it (FEIN).

I will make a blog about this. An obsessive compulsive number called me frequently for 2 weeks asking for my credit card information.
