wants
Tue Jan 3, 2012 7:08:00 pm

for the past 4 years i have had small dogs. a dachshund(rip), chihuahua and boston terrier.

small dogs are a bigger pain in the ass for a big family with young kids then they are worth.

they are smart, stubborn and hard to train.

if you dont have a fenced in backyard you have to walk them constantly and that is something i just dont have time for.

BUT, if you dont walk them they will piss and shit on everything you own.

i made the choice to own them and so i will hold up my end of the bargain and give them a home and love and food and water

but..................

my next dog will take craps bigger then these 2...

that is a breed i dont have any experience with, have you?

i really love the demeanor of a pit bull but my landlord wont allow them *eye roll* and i am forcing myself not to haul off and get a 3rd dog....

good or bad, that is the last thing i need, so i figure i have about 10 more year, give or take, to research the perfect breed for us... but then again, the kids will be older and it won't really matter as much...

They thought my mutt was great pyrenees and lab. He was basically smart as hell and had the sweetness of a puppy. Also, gorgeous.

They're really good with people, but not very good around other dogs. As soon as you establish yourself (or your hubby does) as the shepherd, they will protect you and your kids with their lives. They handle grabby roughhousing from little ones like nothing. They're extremely trainable, even if you start training them as adults, but like any dog, it's better to start young. They're a sheep herd guarding dog, so they're mindful of predators and strange people entering their territory unannounced, meaning they're aggressive toward other large dogs and it's probably best not to let them wander the front yard while you're at work and the mailman stops by. The ones I've known have treated small and medium dogs more like playmates than threats, but the small dogs see 100lbs of fluff coming at them and get a little freaked out, so that's something to be aware of too. Their natural territory is something like 20 square miles, so if they get out of the yard unsupervised, you're going to have your hands full tracking them down. Other than that, they're very affectionate, love to cuddle, and extremely loyal.

They're in my top 3 favourite breeds with Malamutes and Border Collies.

i will have to look more into them. my aunt has a bernese mountain dog, wondering of theyre similar...

i think i will make a list of qualities i want.

top being "will potty train easily" small dogs just never seem to get the "go sit by the door when you have to go potty" thing.

my grandparents got me a chow chow when i was 14 and it literally took him 2 times to get it.

but i will never EVER have a chow again, let alone near my kids

well small dogs don't have as much warning, either, when they have to go out. I have learned the signs of my itialian greyhound, cissy, and we are doing well. But I don't have any other distractions like kids and the like so I can take more time with him. I still have pads down for him at night, though. He is one of the smartest dogs I have ever met. He will pick up a command within three times of learning it.
I never thought I would have a small dog. I have always found them to be annoying.
I love big dogs most of all.
My second dog is only about 40 lbs.
I love labs, a lot. I LOVE Mastifs. Just big gentle giants they are.

yeah, Elvis(boston) is EXTREMELY smart when it comes to learning trick, but for the life of me i cant get them to tell me when they need to go, i just have to try and remember to get them out. they cant even have a nice little doggy bed cause he'll pee all over it..... i am jealous when i see the neighbor girl(9 years old) walking their pittbull, she(the dog) is calm and knowing and sweet but on guard at the same time..... my dogs act like heathens

Smiles. I will tell you something i have learned: if the dog is pawing the floor or walking around in circles he needs to go out.
Pit bulls can be very good dogs. For me, they are just that little bit unpredictable that I could not have one esp if i had kids. Of course all animals have that unpredicatable aspect. there are just some dogs, like pitts, who can back up their bad mood with a lot of force. I don't even let the neighbor kids get around my dogs until make sure the dogs are not in a bad mood. They have never bit anyone but I just worry, you know? I worry too much.

i have a lot of family member with pits and they have never had an issue, yet i had a chow and he....well.....yeah.... im thinking the chows should have a far worse reputation, i just think theyre not as popular and so they arent as widely know for that.

I agree. Chows are very irritable animals.
I don't brand pitt bulls as bad dogs. I think that their size and the damage that can be done if they do something should be considered when getting a dog, though.
I believe that 80 percent of an animals behavior depends on his owner. good owner=happy well mannered dog for the most part.

i agree there, Cruz was one of the 20% where....he was just.... not trustworthy. he had a perfect life, my grandparents bought him for me when i was 14 and i loved him and trained him and he was my boy, he protected and never went without and was just awesome and then, he bit my young cousin and then he bit a young boy....and then he bit my brothers [now] wife and she has good size facial scars, they got a huge settlement from my grandparents insurance and my brother and his wife blew it instead of fixing her face. i now, as an adult, feel as though he should have been put down after the first incident, but back then, i was devastated
