Why is it so cold?
Fri Jan 13, 2012 10:29:45 pm

Ok, I accept that it is winter outside. And I accept that I probably have poor circulation. And I accept that with radiator heating, our little alcove of a bedroom is going to be a few degrees cooler than the rest of the apartment. And I accept that shaving my computer near the window will make me feel a bit chillier.

But all of those things still do not explain why it's SO FREAKIN' COLD IN MY APARTMENT. We had the building managers come up yesterday. We like them a lot and they have been very helpful in the past, but they kind of made us feel like were just crazy. They took a temperature reading and said it was at least 70 degrees in the apartment (i.e., they aren't legally obligated to do anything). There was also a bunch of lectures about using a humidifier and "winter fan mode" that involved a lot of physics. They claim that the windows are nice and tight, but looking over right now I can see the blinds moving. Today, the maintenance crew came in and took out a bunch of water from a section of the radiator panel in our living room, but I have no idea why. They also suggested putting boards in our air conditioning units, but they seemed kind of annoyed about having to do it. They kept stressing that it would be about seven or eight degrees warmer (i.e., high seventies) in the apartment and that we wouldn't be able to use the AC until they took the boards back out. Apparently, that was supposed to deter us, but that sounds exactly like what I want. Worst case scenario: we have fans.

Last year, it was so super hot in our apartment during the winter, and they came in and fixed that. This year, they installed a dial in the living room so we could set the heat to whatever level we wanted. The heating has been working in the living room for the past month, but it has always been significantly cooler in the bedroom. And over the past week it has also been very cold in the living room. I may have only noticed during the past few days, though, because the weather only just got really cold for the first time yesterday.

During the past few days, I have been waking up shivering. Even now, I have on tights, jeans, a sweater, and big fuzzy socks, and I'm still cold.

It's by no means unbearable, but it's not comfortable to me. My boyfriend isn't as bothered (pft, men), but he acknowledges that it has been noticeably cooler in the apartment as a whole, and more so in the bedroom.

The building managers have been very responsive, and keep asking us for updates, but I feel bad complaining about it (especially after yesterday, when they basically told us there was no problem).

Maybe I'm just a whiner and need something to wrong all the time.

I don't know.

He can tell it's colder, because I've been putting my hands on his chest a lot more recently.

my flat is drafty. when heat isn't blowing from the vents, cold air comes up from the basement. IT IS A VICIOUS HORRIBLE CYCLE and i'm almost always wearing a hoodie. in my old house, we just hung out upstairs.

His name is very versitle. He can go full length and sound all Hebrew-ry. Go half-way and sound like a singer from N'Sync. Or keep it short and sound like a plumber.
