Work Nightmare
Sun Jan 22, 2012 11:00:26 pm

I had my first bad dream featuring work last night. I dreamt that the conc acids had been moved to a different fume hood because we were having someone visit the lab. Anyway I was dispensing conc hydrochloric acid without wearing any gloves (I'd never do this in real life) and I got some on my hands, so just wiped it off on my lab coat and carried on with what I was doing (again I would never do this because then I lose the skin on my fingers...). My boss then came over with the people who were visiting, walked up to the dispenser I had just been using and said 'and this is where we keep the hydrofluoric acid', I then piped up and said 'no that's the hydrochloric' my boss then rotated the bottle to show it was in fact hydrofluoric acid. I then got that kicked in the stomach feeling, and said 'oh god I got that all over my hands', I started panicking as did my boss, who ran off to find the emergency treatment gel.
After that I woke up, read this to see why I'm a little afraid of HF.

I *totally* get that nightmare!! The worst thing I ever got on my skin was trifluoroacetic acid, which was quite annoying (it was a tiny drop and not really anyone's fault but I had to go to A&E and wait for hours, after which they asked me if I could still feel my fingers and I said that if I didn't they could safely assume I would've told them by now). Have you got HF on the job??

I don't actually know, but I'd assume so, as there was treatment gel in the fume hood once but no sign of any HF.

I once touched an unknown substance on a train.

So yeah, lived the nightmare. Rookie.

there's never a sign of HF unless you have some glass (or a finger) ready...

Unknown substances have dripped onto my head in train stations.

I think the worst thing is that like phenol you can't feel it burn you...
