My boss is on OKC and other fun stuff
Sun Jan 22, 2012 11:12:35 pm

I just found her profile.

I wonder if I should make fun of her at work. Probably.

In other news. I'm still trying to write this stupid fantasy story, but I keep running in to the same problem. As soon as I finish establishing setting, I have no idea what to write. Nothing comes to mind. Nothing at all. Normally, characters spring fully formed from my mind onto the page. This time, I got nothing.

French The Llama.

Golden LOLportunities.

And.....Well, it's fantasy. The setting tends to be one of the main characters, right?

Maybe all the characters are dead. Except for.......

... an older woman, past her prime but not entirely without charm, who keeps watch over a young warrior, a girl who is smart and troubled.

"She's exotically beautiful, often having an unusual hair or eye color, and has a similarly cool and exotic name. She's exceptionally talented in an implausibly wide variety of areas"

I am totally a Mary Sue.

Eh. Wish I could give you tips on getting over the hump, but I can't even sit still and write for twenty minutes anymore.

Keep trying. That's all I got.

Oooh, I can help (for once).

Think hard about the setting--it's like anywhere you'd be. Where do you go to eat? To hang out? To party? To be quiet? What annoys you about where you are. In short, what to write about will incorporate the setting itself. I'd ask myself little minute questions about my setting to determine how my characters will behave, questions that I may realize I may/may not want to address in the overall story.

For example, I have an idea for a story involving anthropomorphic animals--pretty much all kinds of animals. Then I actually asked myself "What do the carnivores eat?" and I eventually came up with the idea that (fantasy medieval setting for my characters), there will be kings for each type of animal (herbivore, carnivore, etc.) and there will be territories and free-for-all areas, where traveling herbivores can become prey to the carnivores. This sets up for plots like an herbivore befriending carnivores, the attempts of different kingdoms to obtain certain parts of land to give them an advantage, prejudices, etc.

Another piece of advice is to focus on something else in your story to absolutely perfect. Make your characters real people--figure out their fears, likes, dislikes, habits, etc. It's not the exact quote but an animator/director from Pixar said it so...yeah. Those guys know their character development.

Also, kissing animals won't really help yo' problems, lady.

how did you find out?

If I found out my boss wass on OkC I'd quit OkC. Otherwise I'd be bound to find out things that would get me fired.
Also I'm OkC clumsy enough to actually click on their profile in non-anon mode, so they'd know who I was too.

The minute I joined an internet dating site, just weeks after Tom and I split, I was trying to figure out the site and I accidentally clicked on the profile of a colleague of mine. (I was teaching at Berkeley, just there for a year, and didn't know anyone very well, and wanted to impress them.) I immediately blocked him, and was totally horrified. I pretended it didn't happen.

He approached me the next week and said "Oh, I see you're on that site." And then he proceeded to talk to me about the ins and outs of internet dating. I was so embarrassed.

Until that point I genuinely thought he was gay.
