How do you say these words?
Mon Jan 23, 2012 10:32:20 pm

I was talking to an internet friend, who lives in Virginia, about a new co-worker of hers who is from Chicago. She mentioned the strong accent, which I found amusing. Mostly because my boyfriend is from Virginia, and I think he sounds exactly like me. Other than the fact that he says "soda" instead of "pop" like a normal person.

Anyway, I found some video on YouTube of some guy from some place saying some words, and thought I'd do the same. Minus the video, because I just got in from that infamous Chicago weather, and I look the part.

I should mention, this is not a Chicago accent. I lived in Sandwich, IL (rural area) until I was six, grew up in Joliet, IL (South suburb of Chicago) and have been living in the city proper for the past two years. So consider this a general Northern Illinois accent, if you will.

Also, I'm secretly hoping others will upload their own recordings (just cause I'm interested in this stuff), but I know it probably won't happen.

I wish I could more easily post the wma file, without making people download it. I should have just made a video with the screen blocked out so I could post it on YouTube. Or maybe just record this over a picture of cats. Too lazy, though.

A colleague dared me to read this poem: http://www.thepoke.co.uk/2011/12/23/english-pronunciation/

I think I'll start with this one. That is, as soon as I find a decent mic..

I may record one, but probably not before Thursday.

I've seen that before. I know I say some of those words wrong, but I don't care. Hrmph.

For some reason, I have a bunch of recordings of myself reading Shel Silverstein, but I'm too embarrassed to post it, because I'm all animated and story-teller like.

Anyway, I hope you do this.

You shouldn't have suggested that you might do this, because I'm going to keep bugging you about it now.

It's really hard to read these words in my natural accent.

Try using them in a sentence. I had to do that with "roof," because I had been specifically trained to pronounce it a certain way, but that's not how I pronounce it when I'm speaking naturally.

Why?
Probably the teacher thing. Because I teach kids how to read so I know how to properly pronounce words, but that's not how I say them when I talk.
