Yow! It took an extraordinarily long time for me to identify the wreck as a Malibu, and careful examination to determine that it's a 6th gen'.
So, what, the insurance companies just recently became aware that your car was drinking lots of chemicals and breathing carbon monoxide!?
Will you call bullshit? I've had success claiming rental car costs for the duration of litigation as damages against insurance companies that are not forthcoming with a fair compensation. Too bad they still win in aggregate, since there are so many people who just want to settle and won't fight back.

eventually got a total of $20k out of them. which is a fair enough assessment for a 2011 malibu once it has been driven off the dealer lot.

Hm. I gauged (what remained of) the front fascia and side window height:width ratio incorrectly. At any rate, it's good to hear you were fairly compensated for the value of the vehicle and that you didn't sustain severe damage yourself.
