Doing something good for yourself, even if you don't want to do it...
Thu Feb 2, 2012 12:13:19 am

Applied to grad school. Only one of the two programs, though, because there is some problem with their online application system. Totally rushed it, so no high hopes for the future. But at least I did it.

Disabled my OkC account.

Went to group therapy tonight. It was just an orientation meeting. Kind of awkward, but I think I'll keep going.

Told my parents about my brother owning a gun. Via email. Haven't heard back yet.

I didn't apply to grad school because I wanted to do something good for myself.

Well, I actually want to do work that is related to my major, and there's not a whole lot of it with just a B.S.

Although, grad school itself = probably terrible for me.

Why is grad school not doing something good for yourself?

Maybe I'm a snob cause I already have my MS, but I thought it was a great experience. It helped that it was free.

My statement was not a generalization for others. Giving a satisfactory answer for my owns reasons would require revealing too much about my psychological issues.

Although I already revealed enough for an adept psychoanalyst to figure it out.

Mine won't be free. And I'll have $30,000 in student loans after finishing undergrad.

If I don't get offered a TA or RA position for this coming Fall, I'm not going, because I can't afford the out of state tuition. But given a choice, I would prefer to be an RA over a TA any day.

And teaching as a career is just not even something I am remotely interested in doing ever.

It was actually more rewarding than I ever imagined. I mean, I still hated it, but it showed me how far I came as a scientist and in my thinking. I used to be that 18-year-old kid sitting in freshmen chemistry. I was only 21 at the time, turning 22. I definitely had a different perspective after teaching it - especially since I really hated chemistry while doing in undergrad. Found a new appreciation for it and realized the value of it. It laid a foundation. And I appreciate the foundation now that I couldn't see before.
