Train problems
Sun Mar 28, 2010 11:02:04 pm
During my train ride home, I heard an announcement about a route change. There were no printed notices about this change, and no announcement was made to explain if this was a change for all trains or if it was only for the one that I was on.. I decided to get off the train and wait for the next one, hoping that it would not be rerouted, but it was too.
This ordinarily is not a significant problem. I can usually transfer later and eventually get to where I want to go with only a slight delay, but I discovered that the transfer was not an option today. By the time I got to the transfer point, train service on my line had been suspended in both directions. There was also a police officer blocking access. Typically, pink tape blocking the entrance is sufficient. I am not sure why the police officer was necessary. The police officer did not offer any explanation about what happened. The station agent also did not. I had to walk home.
I usually see something in the news when something like this happens, but I did not find anything. There was a knife fight in a train station earlier today, but that was at 5AM, and I was able to get on the train at 11:30AM. A crane fell in downtown Manhattan, but that wasn't close enough to the train line to affect it. I don't know what happened.

I hate conspiracy theories that involve the terrorists.

Also, trains frequently stop running on me with notice only in Korean, so I don't realize I'm being kicked off until everyone gets off and they shoo me off the train.

It's a very effective psychological defense.

Part two of my mental bad assery is to learn the Korean alphabet and how to read at the very least.

I do know about 100 phrases, but not the alphabet.

I would have done that before moving to Korea, but I am obsessed with being overprepared.

If that were the case, they would have given you some BS story. Not explaining something makes people curious.

They usually say something like "police investigation" without specifying any details. No explanation at all was given this time. Maybe the storymakers were not at work today. Inventing their own story would be bad, because it could conflict with other stories that are invented separately.

I forgot. There was one explanation on the last train that I took during my circuitous journey. The conductor said: "See that train on the middle track? That was the reason for all our problems."
It would have been easy to conclude that the train he was referring to had mechanical difficulties, but I had just gotten off that train and it was working fine, and the train that I was on before that one was also being redirected.

When I get bored while riding the train I will often consider and formulate strategies to fend off random subway terror attacks. I am determined to either save the day or at the very least save myself when it all goes down.

I do this too.
