When I was little...
Thu Jul 8, 2010 6:50:57 pm

English class went like this:
Teacher: Hello, how are you?
Proba: Fine, thank you. And you?
Teacher: Fine.

Is that really a standard or usual conversation? I don't really remember a lot of people asking that.

A lot of people ask me how I am, but I rarely know how to answer properly.

You should just lie like everybody else. You can get people in trouble if you answer honestly.

I usually say "fine" or "OK". Most people who ask don't actually care what the answer is. I often don't know how I really am anyway. It's only clear to me when there is a strong emotion. Most of the time, I am in a neutral state, but that doesn't necessarily mean that things are good or bad.

The example that you posted is what I consider to be an empty conversation. Words are exchanged, but no actual meaning is communicated.

I have this conversation far too often.

How do you answer?

This is a very common conversation that always ends in awkward silence afterwards. But it is a good lesson in pragmatics and something we reiterated with ELLs.

What are "ELLs"?

it seems like the whole thing is just a greeting with no intention that more will be said

That depends on who asks and in what situation.

exactly, but, now that I think about it, the whole thing seems like a semi-elaborate greeting ritual

It is most of the time. I hate it most when it's clear that the person who is asking doesn't care about the answer.

well, that's why it's a ritual. people don't really care how others are doing

I prefer yo, wassup because it's like an actual question that people can answer

"What's up?", "What's new?", "How's it going?", etc. are all difficult for me to answer.

when I was little I stared up other girls skirts and shouted "cobwebs!"

I also have noticed it is useless with patients because they always say they are fine, even if they are not.
It seems lots of questions are difficult for erdos0. Why?

Because I interpret language more literally than I should.

they don't require an answer, that's why. you're not supposed to give one. However, sup yo, sup dawg, hey do not and are all preferable. Lots of times, if I know someone, I'll ask what they're doing rather than how they are doing.
