When I was little...
Thu Jul 8, 2010 6:50:57 pm

English class went like this:
Teacher: Hello, how are you?
Proba: Fine, thank you. And you?
Teacher: Fine.

Is that really a standard or usual conversation? I don't really remember a lot of people asking that.

Because I interpret language more literally than I should.

So what is the proper response?
it's okay to say nothing or describe what you are actually up to as opposed to saying "Fine. How are you?" But maybe it is the same.

I expect people to get offended if I don't say anything.

well, yes, so just say fine and let it go :)

The traditional greeting that my grandmother used literally meant "Have you eaten rice yet?". I always thought that was even more absurd than "How are you?". This might be the main reason that I have a problem with empty question greetings.

I like that question. It feels welcoming.

It includes an implicit offer to eat a meal together.

The other greeting that my grandmother sometimes used was "Did you return yet?", which is clearly rhetorical. This was only used at home.
