Downgrading my computer
Fri Dec 17, 2010 6:19:52 am
I have been planning to upgrade my computer for several months. In October, I purchased the motherboard. I was planning to buy RAM on Black Friday, Cyber Monday, or one of the other pre-Christmas sales. The goal was to get each component at the best price within a reasonable time period.
I had to abandon the plan when my old computer started failing to boot properly. It got stuck at the BIOS splash screen more than half the time I tried to start the computer. This was a very bad sign and immediate replacement was required.
The RAM that I was planning to buy increased in price on Black Friday, which was completely unexpected. I bought something else with similar specifications for slightly less. The CPU that I originally planned to buy was an AMD Phenom II X6. A black edition was recently released, and that lowered the list price for the existing CPUs, but that had no effect on the actual retail price at any of the major vendors. Instead of buying the CPU that I was planning to get for the upgrade, I purchased a Sempron 140, which is a downgrade from my old CPU. It's compatible with all the other components that I purchased for the upgrade and it only costs $36. The plan is to continue waiting for the X6 prices to go down.

I forgot to mention that it's not a total downgrade. The RAM is much faster and there is twice as much as before. Also, the CPU has a hidden core that can be unlocked to make it nearly identical in performance to the old one, but I am not unlocking it because it consumes only 45 watts in its current state.

I just realized how incestuous the terminology is. The daughter cards mount onto the motherboard and penetrate the motherboard's slots.

Nothing appears to be defective, but some things haven't been set up yet.

Let us know how it goes.
The details are probably not very interesting. I will be restoring access to all of my hard drives and installing some missing software. The most interesting part is that I will be restoring access to my porn collection.

I thought it was unsafe to have porn on your computer, that a lot bugs came from that. Or is it not from the Internet?

Porn sites can be dangerous, but porn videos can only harm very insecure computers. With proper security, the videos can never harm the computer.

Interesting.
There are ways to safely navigate porn sites, but that requires technical knowledge.

Yeah, I use AdBlock Plus and NoScript and can usually accurately guess what I need to (temporarily) allow on NoScript in order to see a video (porn site or otherwise), but I don't think that's sufficient, so I only do it if someone posts something funny and then I revoke temporary permissions immediately afterward. Otherwise I stay away from porn sites because I don't have the technical knowledge.

NoScript can protect you from scripts from external sites, but it doesn't help when the malware is hosted on the site that you want to access. Videos generally are unplayable on a site if noscript blocks the site hosting the video.

I had one minor incident that is only slightly amusing. I got an error message that is so rare that there are only 7 entries in Google for it. This was the consequence of a misspelling in a configuration file.
