Doesn't Feel Like Christmas
Sat Dec 25, 2010 5:28:09 am
Despite the fact that I have never celebrated Christmas beyond the occasional exchange of gifts, Christmas has always had some kind of feeling associated with it. I never knew exactly what it was, but it was clearly something unique. This is the first time that I am aware of not feeling it. I think that the feeling of Christmas for me is a mixture of the "Olympics feeling" coupled with the experience of hearing Christmas music and seeing Christmas decorations.
When I was young, the Olympics was a highly immersive experience that occurred over a relatively short period of time compared to the duration between recurrences. Every television in my home was tuned to the Olympics when it was on, and it was on 24 hours a day back then. After it was over, the Olympics were seldom mentioned anywhere for several years. Christmas is very much like this. It's something that gets rare mention for 11 months, followed by complete immersion.
I think that the feeling is absent this year because I have seen fewer decorations and because I no longer listen to the radio except when my alarm clock radio comes on in the morning.

I have never put up a Christmas tree and my mother hasn't put one up since 1981.

Why?

Why is the spirit necessary? The presents can go in the closet.

It hasn't felt like christmas since middle school. the magic is gone.

I have never gotten more than 5 presents for a single Christmas. There are plenty of ways to store what I get.

That just reminded me of the Christmas feeling when I was younger. My mother put up Christmas decorations every year until 1981. They always stayed up until the week after Chinese New Year, even when the new year began in March.

When I was a kid, my family always put our tree up a month or so early, and it took us hours to decorate it, and hours more to string up decorations around the house. This was the one occasion all of my siblings had a lot of fun together. The tree was the most significant, enjoyable part of Christmas for me. We plugged in the Christmas tree lights as soon as it started getting dark, and the colors and atmosphere it lent to the night felt truly magical where no other part of the holiday did; there was never any animosity between my siblings and me when the tree was lit.

The lighting was always magical for me during the first few days every year.
