A small break from hibernation
Wed Dec 29, 2010 4:19:57 am

I had originally expected only to have a 3 day weekend due to Christmas, but the blizzard has resulted in a much longer period without work. Today is the third day without train service in my neighborhood. Since the weather got a little warmer, I decided to finally venture outside to take photos and make a deposit at the bank. The bank isn't close, but the 2 mile journey was the only option due to the lack of train service. It took 90 minutes in each direction due to the amount of snow and the unevenness of it.

I will venture out again tomorrow for groceries and to take more pictures..

I am not sure why someone lost their shoes.

Approximately how deep was it where you had to walk?

During my 3 hour journey, I saw 2 different ambulances get stuck in snow/traffic. I wonder how many people have died because of the storm.

Mostly between 2 and 3 feet. Some areas had 5 foot mounds, but I did not try to climb them.

I've had that happen to me when I was a kid because my shoe laces were always tied loosely so I could take the shoes off easily. While walking in deep snow, the snow gripped the shoes and pulled them off my feet. But I went back and dug them out.

Did you ever lose both at the same time? Whoever lost this pair did not go back to get them.

That is obscene. We get snow that deep up around Denver or Crested Butte, but never quite that deep in Montrose.

Which means they walked barefoot in 3 feet of snow.

It was very rare in NYC until a few years ago. From 1977 to 2000, I think it only happened twice. Since 2005, I think it has happened once a year.

Yes, I've lost both at the same time. And my feet were frozen for hours.

Do you live in or near a dangerous neighborhood? It could be that someone was running from police or running after getting caught in an attempted burglary or running from a beating, and could not take the time to worry about their shoes.

They could also have been high on something and didn't care.

This isn't really in my neighborhood. This was an area that I reached after around an hour of walking. I'm not sure if it's a high crime area or not. I have never ventured there before.

I should check the forecast. There's supposedly a 90% chance of snow tomorrow night, but I'm not sure how many inches. I want to be prepared if this monstrosity is coming my way.
