More Google Failures

re:
Google Collapse?
Wed Jul 14, 2010 5:27:42 pm

Gmail has been loading extra slowly for me for the past few weeks. Last week, my mobile access to gmail stopped sending me notifications when new messages became available. Now I am getting repeated Google Error pages when trying to load Youtube videos. I'm not sure if they have a pervasive bug/attack or if they may be over capacity. Either way, it doesn't look good for them.
Google DNS was not working this morning. I have switched back to using my ISP's DNS. I also couldn't reach google.com for an hour and Google Ads were loading intermittently. I suspect that the same person who is currently mismanaging Youtube may be somehow responsible. It could be Larry Page who is at fault. He hasn't officially replaced Eric Schmidt as CEO of Google yet, but the decision was made for him to take over recently and he may already be influencing things.

The intermittent failures are apparently not over yet.

So how soon do you think we'll all have to find a new videos site?

Vimeo is the only decent alternative at the moment.

I've never heard of it (or if I have I don't remember).

They bought it a few years ago.

They're also no longer notifying me of replies to comments I've made on videos.

Scratch that. They may or may not be notifying of replies, but I looked more closely and saw that you had replied to yourself.

One thing I have noticed: Since I now have to log into YouTube via Google, the "stay logged in" cookie is not working on YouTube if I log out of Google.

That's poorly worded. To put it another way, if I log out of Google, I have to back in on YouTube.

That could potentially be very annoying but I very rarely log out.

I used to log out rarely, too, but since OkCupid wouldn't let me make a new account with the Gmail account I already had ("this email address is already in our database" or something along those lines), I made a second Gmail account, so now I switch from one to the other periodically to prevent a build-up of messages.

Speaking of which, even though OkCupid wouldn't let me register until I changed my IP address, I'm still receiving the usual site messages at those email addresses.

And of course, I can't shut it off, because those accounts don't actually exist. (I've heard the "unsubscribe me" link that Web sites provide does nothing, so I haven't tried that yet.)

I also have two Gmail accounts. I keep one perpetually logged in on Firefox and the other on Chrome.

I don't have Chrome. Firefox has been my only browser for a while now.
