Getting free stuff at Whole Foods Market
Thu Feb 24, 2011 11:06:24 pm
I shop at Whole Foods Market 2 to 4 times per week. I am familiar with all of their regular merchandise and I like to experiment with new products when I encounter them. This has lead to an interesting discovery.
New products often appear on the shelves before they get entered into the computer system. In the past, this resulted in delays at checkout while someone did research to find the price. This practice was abandoned last year. My first encounter with this new policy involved a conversation that was approximately like this:
I'm not sure if the policy was revised again or if the cashier that serviced me today was lazy. I bought some veal stock that wasn't in the computer system. There was no delay to make a note of it and the item does not appear on my receipt. It was just given to me for free without any delay.

cashier: I'm sorry. This item's not in the computer. Do you really want it?
erdos: Yes.
cashier: OK. Just give me a moment while I write down the code. Then you can have it for free.
erdos: OK.

Also, I once received free microwavable bags. The cashier said "we don't sell this", and she put it into my shopping bag. I don't use microwaves, but they were nice bags.

Maybe the cashier was already aware that that particular item wasn't in the system yet, like someone came ahead of you and s/he'd already made a note of it.

I had neglected that possibility.

Freebies are great. Sadly, I have yet to get any at my market.

Everything is free if your pockets are big enough and you don't mind putting open foodstuffs in them.

You can increase the probability to almost certainty if you scan every unfamiliar product with the price checker.

They have many hidden cameras, but I have never seen security detain a customer. Maybe those cameras are fake or nobody is watching.

You should try putting a camera in your basket to see if they let you have it for free.

I am not tall enough to reach the cameras.

Surely you own a grappling hook, or a bow & arrow and some rope...

Overwaitea has cameras covering every single inch of the store, and my ex-boyfriend from high school used to steal condoms from them on a weekly basis... He never got caught, until that one time he did.

I can't stop laughing at this.

Maybe they just didn't want him to reproduce.

Did he use a palming technique to conceal the theft or did he just do it with total disregard for the cameras?

Stealing from places that have video cameras can be easy if the item isn't too big and you can position yourself well.
I've only stolen from a store once, and the only reason I did it is because they wouldn't accept an exchange on the same faulty item they sold me. I took a new one and left them the faulty copy. Dammit, you can't sell me a book that has 20 blank pages and then tell me you don't accept returns. Street justice ftw.

Or the cashier was told to let the customer have it for free but they neglected to tell him/her about recording it. That happened a lot with new cashiers at TRU.
