Kneepad Idiom?
Tue Mar 8, 2011 2:49:09 am
My client told his girlfriend that he has been using my services for over 10 years. This was followed by either an idiom or joke which I did not understand. He said:
I am not sure what this means. Is it an old French idiom? He is in his 80's and from France. My guess is that this somehow relates to infancy, since he is jokingly exaggerating how long ago we met. Did French toddlers wear knee pads to protect their knees while crawling around on the floor?
Also, he had a wife a few months ago. I'm not sure if she died or if they got divorced. She wasn't there today. He felt no need to hide his intimacy with the girlfriend.

That was so long ago, we were still wearing kneepads.

Could he have said "knee pants"? Children from that era I believe wore knickers, or knee length pants. That's my best guess.

A search provides nothing. It was only a cursory search, though, because I am too tired for the full search.
Strange phrase.

Interesting. It seemed clear to me that he said "knee pads", but perception and memory are very easy to distort and it's a Monday.

Maybe he was using knee pads instead of mouse pads.

I sometimes use my thigh that way. It only works with optical mice.

A quick google search of a few variations on the phrase as you heard it, as carmalita posited it may actually have been said, and a few other possible things turned up surprisingly few results.
The only one I feel is worth mentioning: I searched "still wearing knee pants" (with quotes) and got 507 hits. The fourth one on the list was an autobiography by Wright Morris (which prompted another search on just who the eff that is) which included the sentence: "He had grown at least an inch taller than I was, but he was still wearing knee pants and high-top hook- and-eye shoes." in reference to seeing a high school classmate for the first time after his father remarried.
Most of the results for "knee pants" on its own came back as references to the style of dress for young men and boys in the early to mid twentieth century, especially in the US and Europe.
None of the results for "knee pads" shed any light on what your client may have meant.

The only thing that comes to mind from "knee pads" is fellatio, but it sounds like you two have never been that close.

It is a reference to bike riding as a child.

Are you suggesting that Frenchmen have a lot of girlfriends?
