Undowngradable
Fri Mar 11, 2011 2:00:56 am
A client of mine decided to switch from Time Warner Cable to Verizon FiOS two months ago. Due to extreme unreliability of the Verizon service, which included 4 separate on-site repairs and a complete rewiring due to complete failure of the first installation, my client decided to cancel the service.
Verizon has already turned off the video and internet services, but they refuse to revert the phone system back to POTS. That means the optical network terminal has to continue to be used for phone service. The problem is that the repeated failures of internet, television, and phone were due to interruptions in signals sent to this device. That means the unreliability of phone service might become permanent.

I don't think I've ever heard a kind word about Verizon.

That is a seriously screwed up situation.

This reminds me of another recent situation of undowngradability. A client of mine has been using Quickbooks Enterprise Edition, but they don't have the installation disks for it. Their former accountant installed it. They have a copy of Quickbooks Professional Edition, but the data cannot be downgraded to work with that. Intuit only provides a way to upgrade. For downgrading, their official recommendation is to "use third party software". They do not specify which third party software to use. A quick search reveals that there are many, and all those that I read about either don't work at all or convert only part of the data.

Damn corporations. Doing their corporate stuff.
This might not be good for their profits. If someone wants to switch from FiOS to DSL, they can't. That forces them to get some form of internet that won't go through Verizon's lines.

For some customers, yes. But with cable, internet and phone providers, they for some reason tend to do well by just pretending that the customer doesn't have any other options. I think they (correctly?) expect that people will just be too frustrated to fight them.

They had monopolies for a long time, but they don't anymore.
