The basics of blogstalk for OKC journalists
Fri May 6, 2011 7:33:37 pm
Blogstalk is a social networking site based on an extension of OKC's journal system.
Posting a blog entry
To post a new blog entry, visit http://blogstalk.com/newpost.php. You can either access it from this post, or you can visit the "blog" link under the "My" section of the menu on the left. There is a button for "Make a new post" that links to this.
Fill in the title and blog text. The controls for visibility and comment permissions should be fairly intuitive. The "automatic br" option is for automatic line breaks. When you are ready to publish the blog post, click on the "post" button.
Following activity
Similar to the favorites system on OKC, blogstalk has a following system. This allows you to see blog posts and comments of followed members separately from the activity of other members. To follow someone, visit their profile and click on the "follow" button. You have an option to either notify them or not. This can also be undone by clicking on the "unfollow" button. Followed "blogs" and "comments" are listed separated in the "followed" section of the menu on the left.
Notifications
the notification bar on the top of the page shows you how many new mail messages, followers, comments in your blog, and replies to your comments there are. Reply notification works only if someone clicks on the "reply" button located next to your comment.
I will edit and add more to this later.

I just realized that I used the wrong account to post this, but it doesn't matter.

Can we search by username?

Fri May 6, 2011 7:49:23 pm
Or other identifiers? I was just going to say I didn't think my firefox spell check works but it does.

If they have the same username they use elsewhere, CTRL + F works.

under Strangers' on the left is "list". go there and do a ctrl-f search or just look through. that will work too.

I had planned on going through the entire left hand panel, but this is actually simpler, since it's pretty intuitive to begin with and doubly so if you're an okcer. For simplicity's sake, I'll just add a few things to your post instead of making my own:
My Comments: This displays every comment you've made. All of them. No more two pages nonsense!
Replies: At the top of the page, only NEW replies are shown. The link in the left hand panel also shows all previous replies.
Followers: A list of people who have followed you (like saving you in their favorites on okc). However, they will only show up in this list if they chose to follow with notification; if they followed secretly, they won't be in this list.
Enemies: A list of people you've blocked or hidden or both; also shows what action you took (e.g., whether you hid them or blocked them). Also, blocking someone prevents them from seeing your comments. If they had previously saved you in their followed list, blocking removes you from their followed list.
Reblog: Similar to OkCupid's "Post your own response" button. Handy, but rarely necessary, and it is disabled on private (followed-members-only) posts.
What's allowed and what's not: Pretty much anything is allowed, except nudity/pornography, because blogstalk is open to all ages. However, even that is acceptable if it's in a private post.

re: comment#9
I kind of guessed on the enemies, because I wasn't certain whether it was blocking someone or hiding them that also prevented them from seeing your comments.
