It was probably a failed upgrade.

So...
Erik thought it would be JUST AWESOME to put a paperclip on the end of a rubber band and shoot it at Vinay's eye, and it would have just been Erik and Vinay's problem except Vinay had a cup of coffee and was standing over James, who was fixing our router at the time...
Anyway, we'll have things back up soon. Sorry for the inconvenience.

There is apparently also a third story. This is clearly a coverup.

It is suspicious that the mailbox problem got resolved when the site started working again.

I really think they do forget that they have thousands and thousands of users and being free is not license to be unprofessional.

"How much freedom can we give them to self monitor?"
"Is there an infinite supply of 'nice guys'?"
"What happens when we take away another method of communication?"
"How much can we fuck it up before they actually stop using the site?"
I'm sure OKC is an ongoing social experiment.

Their disregard for the users is very suspicious. I still suspect that the true agenda is trying to sell support contracts for OKWC. They designed their own web server for reasons unknown to me. Apache is a free web server used by over 90% of websites and has been proven to be reliable and capable of handling tremendous loads. I don't know what benefit their own web server supposedly has, but they insist on using it. I think that OKCupid.com is really just a site that they created to demonstrate that OKWC works, but they couldn't find anyone who would want to pay them to help with deployment on a site."Is there an infinite supply of 'nice guys'?"

And, what you say, erdos, plays right into this sentiment...

I have been convinced of this from the beginning.
