Peeling a raw egg
Sun Jun 28, 2009 8:14:57 pm

I was never allowed to cook when I lived with my parents. When I moved into my own apartment, I was excited by the chance to finally perform the numerous culinary experiments that were in my mind. I learned to crack open eggs late in life. My first attempt resulted in an unsatisfactory quantity of shell getting into the final product. I had to think of a different way to do it.

I tried a methodical approach by first lightly tapping the egg until small cracks formed. In doing this, I discovered that the shell actually has two layers. There is a hard outer layer and a soft inner membrane. When cracked carefully enough, the inner membrane does not break. Using a knife, I peeled the hard layer off of the inner membrane. After I completely removed the hard layer from half of the egg, I punctured a hole in the inner membrane and poured out the contents of the egg. It's time consuming, but very clean.

Always start on the larger side of the egg.

I only peel half the egg. It would be an empty sack if I peel the whole egg, but that isn't necessary. I only need to peel enough to pour out the yolk.

It is. A sac is an organic sack.

I am able to do that now, but that was after I discovered how to peel eggs.

A sack that is part of a biological structure.

It is less flavorful than cow's milk, but it is tolerable.

My aunt said you're obsessive compulsive, but that she wants you to make a fruit salad because it would be perfect. I just had to comment you this. Yes, I read blogs out loud to other people who are in the area.

I have selective OCD. Some things are extremely organized and some things are extremely messy.

What is extremely organized, and what is messy?

Food and computer stuff are extremely organized. Clothing is semi-organized. Most other things are disorganized.

Why weren't you allowed to cook while living with your parents?

My mother did most of the cooking. It's part of her culture to believe that only the mother should do the cooking. None of my siblings ever cooked until they moved out. My father was a chef, but he only cooked special holiday meals.
