Nobody wants to admit failure
Fri Jun 10, 2011 5:43:22 pm

Wednesday night, I told the assistant general manager that the restaurant will never have Opentable if they continue using their current internet service provider. The Opentable technician had agreed. The AGM started writing an email to the owner, GM, and a few other people in high level positions. He was almost ready to click on the send button for a message stating what I had told him, but he stopped. He just couldn't admit defeat. It was already 9:30PM at this point. He tried calling the ISP, but they have awful customer service and nobody was available at that hour. He agreed to let me go home, but he did not send that email.

The next day, he had a technician come in from the ISP. The technician could not get Opentable working. He called me a few times throughout the day, and it was obvious to me that he was running out of ideas. He was either repeating things that he had already tried before or he was inventing wild new ideas out of desperation. He left last night without the system working.

This morning, I got another call from the technician. He was at the restaurant again. He replaced the modem and still can't get Opentable to work. Internet is also not working now, and for unknown reasons. I just got a call from the manager requesting my presence to fix this mess. I expect to get the internet working, but I am certain that Opentable will still not be working.

Everyone involved should just admit that they failed, but they won't.

Considering the incompetence and poor customer service, they should change the ISP even if Opentable did work.

I don't get the AGM's attitude. Defeated by what? A need to have a crappy ISP? Makes no sense.

Sorry you're having to deal with it.

It's defeat for him because he couldn't orchestrate the technicians in a way that got it to work.

I feel sorry for the owner. The AGM sounds like a dumb ass and I certainly wouldn't want him running MY restaurant. Incompetency makes me insane. Sorry erdos, I hope things get better soon.

The GM is dumber. He is the one who chose the ISP without consulting me first.

Well, I hope you're not getting paid with a lifetime of meals because I'm betting they won't be around long.

I'm sorry. That would frustrate the hell out of me.

Today I had to reprimand two people at softball who got in to a fight. They were both in the wrong, but neither would admit it. I spent so much time talking through their skulls that I was then too exhausted to even continue playing.

What I'm saying is, there are dolts everywhere. Just be grateful you're getting paid to deal with yours.
