Paradoxical Alertness
Mon Jun 13, 2011 3:29:47 am

I have noticed that I score higher on Zuma Blitz after taking melatonin. Considering that a soporific should decrease alertness, this should not happen. It isn't a matter of concentrating better because I am more relaxed. I have a tendency to be abnormally relaxed without trying. I actually get somewhat tense when I become a bit sleepy. I think it's a reflexive adrenaline rush to help keep me awake.

I get that way right before I fall asleep if it's artificial tiredness.

Well, melatonin is a hormone. It has all kinds of other uses that are not strictly regulated to sleep management...
Maybe it's helping your menopause.

:P

Sometimes I find that there are tasks that people say require a great deal of concentration that become suddenly easier for me when my mind is unfocused. Particularly hand-eye coordination things. Maybe it's something similar?

There are several thoughts I have rolling around in my head about chemical stimulation of the brain, none of which are fully coming together because of sleepiness. Interesting that you become tense when you become sleepy. Did you fight nap times when you were a kid?

It's definitely not that for me. I concentrate with tremendous intensity effortlessly. I get into unintentional trances when I do things like writing software or playing games. Melatonin doesn't do that to me. I actually get a bit agitated.

The only nap times I had were in kindergarten. I just lay down and stayed awake.

which is interesting since you require so much sleep.

When I was young, I was forced to sleep 11 hours a night.

that sounds about right. our bedtime would be 7p and we'd usually get up around 6-7am. but we weren't allowed to take naps then.

There wasn't a rule against napping. I just didn't do it.

I like napping now, but I often abuse it.

I remain sitting upright when I nap. It looks like meditation.

Sleeping on the train is sometimes more refreshing than sleeping in bed.

Maybe you get too relaxed. I maintain enough tension to remain upright.

i'm still upright but if my mind relaxes than i am a goner. i find trains to be extremely soothing for my thoughts.

I briefly open my eyes at every stop. This prevents deep sleep, but I still can get some dreams.
