The Restaurant
Tue Jun 21, 2011 5:22:11 pm
I got a call from the owner of the restaurant today. I was wondering why he called. I usually get calls from the assistant general manager, and occasionally from J. J is a former restaurant owner who has been advising in the startup of the new restaurant. I was just informed that J has been let go. This doesn't surprise me. J's restaurants had all failed due to mismanagement that was quite obvious to me. I suspect that the assistant general manager either quit or got fired. What the owner wanted to discuss was a matter for management and did not require the owner to be involved.
The call was about setting up video surveillance. He also asked about getting the internet connection to be faster. At some point, I suggested switching internet service providers. Without explanation, he informed me that he did not want to switch, despite knowing about the issues that we have had. If we upgrade to a faster type of service with the same ISP, we will probably have the same type of issues again.

What is their issue with switching internet service providers? Do they have some personal investment in the one they are using now? They seem unusually bullheaded....

I hope you find a way to convince them that does not take a lot of energy. I really can't stand using energy for something that obviously needs to change.

I definitely suspect that there is some personal investment. It's a small ISP that I never heard of. I doubt they found it via Google. It was probably through somebody at the company who has personal ties with the owner of the restaurant.

Ah, yeah, that makes sense. Well, no, it doesn't make sense why they won't switch for the betterment of their own business. But I get why they are so defensive about it now.

You should say: "If you're not going to listen to my advice, then I don't understand why you're paying me. You could get the same results by hiring some random 14 year old tech junky to do my job. By forcing me to work in these conditions, I'm unable to do my job properly, and you're causing me unnecessary stress."
Or at least that's my take on things.

I have decided that this is actually the easiest job ever. They pay me even when I can't get things to work. Instead of stressing out, I should just relax.Or at least that's my take on things.

I'm not sure suggesting one's job could be done by some random 14 year old tech junky is the way to go. Or at least that's my take on things.

Is there any way you can say to the manager:
Who's blowing you at your current ISP that is making you desire to keep their crappy service?

The implication should be that being an asshat about the ISP is making all of erdos's expertise irrelevant. Not that a snot nosed punk with delusions of knowledge is as qualified as erdos is.

I got what you meant. I just don't think it'd work.
