¿Habla Español?
Mon Sep 21, 2009 8:55:19 pm

As I was leaving for work this morning, a woman approached me and asked: "Anybody living here speak Spanish?". I said "no" and the man who was with her echoed my "no" and wrote something on a pad. It appeared that he was recording my answer. They then walked over to my neighbor's house and rang the doorbell. I have no idea what their intentions were.

You should have confused her by responding in Mandarin Chinese, while juggling swords.

The swords were upstairs. I would have been late for work if I had gone back upstairs to get them.

The looks on their faces would have been totally worth it.

It's too much work just for a little bit of amusement.

I prefer something simpler like urinating on a stone for them.

to win the elections, they have to cater to the majority.
I thought that the regular census was used to determine what is needed to manipulate the vote.

maybe these are people with initiative who distrust "the system"
What could they do with the data?

But it's not a Hispanic neighborhood. They won't be able to manipulate many votes.

the strategy shall be designed to cater to a non-hispanic community then.
They should have investigated which other languages are spoken at my house.

That's a little...odd.

That is why I posted it. I'm trying to get some hypotheses for why they were asking.

they are probably new and hence inexperienced at this.

their endeavour looks unlikely to succeed.

Maybe they were in school or something and doing a project...?

They were too old for that to be likely. They both appeared to be in their 40's or 50's.

I think there is a community college around here. May neighbor gets mail from one, but I don't know the exact location.

Oh...well, maybe they were doing it for a child and they didn't want the child doing it because it might be dangerous...or maybe they were just doing it to see how many people around there speak Spanish, just out of curiosity...

That is an odd thing to do for curiosity. Maybe they were unemployed for a very long time and had nothing else better to do.
