Making Shoes - Part 1

I have been intrigued by the concept of "barefooting shoes" for a long time, but I haven't purchased any, because they are overpriced and I don't agree with the designs of any that I have found. The general principle behind them is that there is a difference in body mechanics between walking barefoot and walking while wearing conventional shoes. Regular shoes have a rigid sole and the front is curved to allow a rolling movement which substitutes for the natural flexion of the foot that happens when walking barefoot. Also, regular shoes have a very thick heel and usually some type of arch support which allows a person to maintain comfort while being in a bad posture and using the wrong muscles for standing and walking.

Barefooting shoes are designed to address these issues. The common approach for allowing the foot to flex is to divide the hard sole into separate parts that can move independently of each other. The entire sole is also typically made much thinner than conventional ones to allow subtle curvatures in the shoe to occur.

My original plan was to make fake shoes. I was going to add fake shoe laces on top of a pair of neoprene socks to make them look like shoes. I decided against that, because the bottom would probably wear out very quickly. It also would offer very little protection if I stepped on glass or a thumbtack. The other problem is that neoprene traps moisture and would not be convenient for wearing all day. I considered modifications to resolve these issues. For added protection, I could add an extra layer of something. I was considering either rubber or silicone, but I had not made a final decision on what to use. For ventilation, I could cut out a section at the top and replace it with a breathable fabric.

I thought about the modifications needed and concluded that it would be almost as much work as making an entirely new pair of shoes from scratch, so I decided to do this. I am currently at the stage of researching materials and developing a design.

I am inside a T-shirt store where I have done computer work IRL, but in the dream, they do not sell T-shirts. Instead, they offer a hard drive cloning service. I don't know why I used their service instead of doing it at home. I brought a drive for them to copy and I waited several hours. The cashier who was there when the process started left and was replaced by someone who doesn't know anything about the process. I convince him to let me take a look to see how the process is progressing. He goes to the bathroom while I am doing this. The copying finishes while the cashier is away and I retrieve my drives. I wait for him to return but he takes a long time and I consider leaving without paying.

A car arrives that releases a lot of smoke. The driver comes out and tells me that the car is powered by "solid gas". It is a new type of fuel for cars that the government is giving out for free. It is made from chemically processed latex gloves and retains the shape and appearance of gloves. The ones being distributed by the government are in great abundance due to their use during the swine flu epidemic.

The alarm awakens me.

I am Josh Groban's backup singer. I don't mean backup in the sense of singing in the background while he sings the lead. I mean backup in the sense that I have to sing if he is ill or on vacation. We rehearse together at my mom's apartment. Some of the dance moves are extremely difficult. One involves jumping up 6 feet, catching a pole between my knees, and suspending myself in the air using only the pressure between my knees. There are also some extremely slow backflips that are impossible to do without levitation.

After rehearsal, Josh leaves and I have to clean up the huge mess. Somehow our dancing scattered tremendous quantities of litter all over the floor. Some of the litter catches on fire and it rapidly spreads throughout the apartment destroying everything. I escape safely, but my sister does not. However, she somehow remains completely unharmed despite having been enveloped in flames. She confesses that she is a Mason and that Masons had mastered fire several centuries ago.

I go back in time to before the fire and manage to prevent it from spreading. I do this by isolating the burning litter. There is a section of the kitchen with fireproof tiles and I dump the burning litter in the center of that area. The fire eventually burns out and I wake up.

Bathroom Voyeur?

I was at the Columbus Circle mall today. When I went to the restroom, there was a line of men waiting, which is not a common occurrence there. I eventually saw the reason. There are only two urinals in there. One man stood at one of them the whole time. Only one urinal was being used by the rest of us. The man who stood there was very tall and had a clear view of the other urinal despite the partition between the two. When it was my turn, I covered myself with my hand, but I saw him glance over a few times. As I left, I saw three police officers enter the restroom. I did not stay to see what happened.
