re:
9PM Sunlight

It's something that I watch for every year. Since I was young, I always looked at the sky before going to bed, and I always made special note of when I could still see sunlight outside. 9PM was mandatory bedtime for me until some time in my teens. For about a month every year, bedtime happened when there was still light outside. That just made it feel extra wrong, but it already felt wrong enough without that, because my bedtime was the only mandatory one.

I can now go to bed almost any time I want, with the exception of Sunday nights, but I still make a mental note of when I can see sunlight at 9PM. I wonder how much of my nocturnality is based on rebellion against this imposed bedtime. My primary reason for being self-employed is that it gives me the freedom to choose my own sleeping patterns. I wonder how different my life might be if I had not been forced to go to bed at 9.
I broked it. :/

A Day In The Life...

My plans for Sunday:

Chop vegetables for my iguana, a medley of green beans, snap peas, cauliflower, broccoli, green pepper, scallion greens, carrot peels, parsley. Also, I will make fresh bread crumbs in the food processor. His meals consist of a bed of chopped greens (collard, mustard and turnip), topped with vegetables and bread crumbs. For a treat he gets an additional topping of chopped fruit, with peels, banana being his favorite.

Prepare more broccoli, cauliflower and carrot (strips) to be eaten with dressings as a snack.

Make garlic and shallot sofrito, which requires peeling fresh garlic and shallots, tossing in oil and salt, roasting in an oven and puree in the food processor.

Make ranch dressing with sofrito, mayo, buttermilk, chopped chives, salt and pepper.

Make blue cheese dressing with sofrito, mayo, buttermilk, blue cheese crumbles, chopped scallion whites, thyme leaves, lemon zest, salt and pepper.

Make cocktail sauce with ketchup, honey, lemon juice, minced horseradish, and hot sauce.

Make tartar sauce with mayo, chopped sweet pickles, minced scallion whites, and lemon zest.

Make court bouillon with (cooking) chablis, water, yellow onion, celery, parsley, thyme, garlic cloves, peppercorns, crushed red pepper, cumin and salt.

Poach raw shrimp in court bouillon, peel and de-vein. (Cocktail shrimp.)

Peel and butterfly more raw shrimp in preparation to be dredged in a mixture of flour, salt, pepper, and Old Bay seasoning, dipped in an egg bath, dredged again, then fried in oil. (Popcorn shrimp.)

Mix brown sugar, ketchup, and spicy mustard, to make meatloaf glaze.

Replace newspaper in iguana's cage.

Work a 9-10 hour shift in a bustling restaurant, starting with making an avocado crouton marinade and ending with the universally-envied task of boiling out and scrubbing clean 4x 45# friers.

Drink some beers and take some shots of Jäger while I diagnose the problem with my cousin's husband's laptop (running very slow and often throwing up the dreaded Blue Screen Of Death) AND my cousin's son's laptop (left it running atop a leather couch one night, accumulated a lot of condensation underneath, and ever since the display doesn't work).

Maybe (if I'm lucky) have some time to check up on what peoples are saying online, and possibly comment on some of it.

I ♥ both the facial expressions and that he has mastered the “don't stop, pick right back up” lesson of musical performance.

Why are we here?

No, I don't mean the old philosophical question about the existence of life (on Earth). I mean why is everyone on this site? Just curious, that's all.

I first became interested when I read what erdos was writing in his OkC journal about the new site he was designing, but I was reluctant to participate at first because many people here appear to know each other, but none of them really know me, although some might know who I am. So for a while I watched occasionally.

My decision to stop lurking and begin posting was a combination of liking the atmosphere and content of other people's posts, plus realizing that it could be something different than any of the other sites on which I socialize. I thought maybe it would be a refreshing change to be a stranger again, and for the first time to maintain anonymity by not revealing my true personal details in my profile. That facilitates a greater level of candor, making it easier to write publicly about things that I would not want certain acquaintances, friends or family members to read. I've never had such an outlet online.

Ironically I am also trying to avoid being stalked. There is at least one person who secretly follows what I write. Sometimes she tries to bait me with fake accounts. As far as I can tell her behavior is at worst intentionally irritating (lulz-seeking, I suppose), but I wouldn't put it past her to use what I say in confidence as more than ammunition for ridicule. I don't think she knows about this site, and even if she does I have not told anyone except erdos that I use it.

Another thing I am looking to avoid is politics, meaning both political discussions and social conflict between users. The former can be interesting, but it makes for a friendlier environment when hot button topics are not at the forefront. The latter is only interesting to me when it is in good humor, but even when it isn't I find myself getting drawn in too often because I object to some perceived unfairness.

In a nutshell, I am here because I like the way the site is designed, there is a variety of quality people, it serves as a retreat from the undesirable aspects of the other sites I use, and I would like to open up somewhere to other people about personal matters. No relationship news though, since I have no relationship nor do I have any real prospects of which I am aware, but I do tend to be oblivious about such things.

The closest I've had to a relationship issue in recent times is a puzzling syncing (?) problem with a Dell E171FPb that I still haven't figured out. Why must it be so difficult? It seems to be functional. Lights are on, test screen displays, and it even gives an auto-adjusting messages when any computer to which it is connected changes the display mode. Still, it's not giving me any signals to work with, just a blank, black screen. Yeah, I don't really expect anyone to know what's going on there unless they've seen the same problem before, but wanted to mention it in case someone has. I've already checked many support forums and found no matching description of the symptoms. (I think it's playing hard to get.)

I should be sleeping, but

instead I am sitting here listening to the sound of what I think is the horn of an automobile, which has been blasting non-stop for almost an hour, from somewhere in the parking lot directly outside of my bedroom window.

I would go out to see what it is myself, but I don't feel like getting dressed or caught up in any questioning, depending on what I might find, so I called the police and asked them to investigate it.

At first I suspected it was mere mischief, however now I am curious about what it really is.

Adding to my curiosity is the fact that it just now stopped for about one second and then resumed.

The Metal Cabin

There is a metal cabin in the forest, far from civilization. Inside are many people, all dead. What was the cause of their deaths?
