on first blog..... by thelastword
i did mean blogging but i might tell you some of what i felt.... it wouldn't be from an iraqi perspective like salam pax... i was never there.....!!!
i live in england, but for me they war began on 9/11.... i had my 6 month old lad sat in his bouncing chair, my first child.... i remember that day so clearly... it really was a day that changed the world.... before 9/11 everyone thought they were safe... there was no fear of terrorism and suicide bombers.... the irish conflict over here had seemed to have been sorted and the future was looking bright.... but... that morning , the fear i learned that day will stay with me forever....
i remember waking as normal, going downstairs for my usual morning routine of coffee and morning T.V.... i was waiting for 'Sliders' to come on BBC2... i was less than amused when the beginning program was interrupted to air "an important announcement" from the BBC News.... it was a confused report in the beginning ...shots of the WTC on fire with reports that a plane had crashed into the building.... i thought it was just an accident, that's what it seemed to be at first...
it was when the second plane hit the WTC.... that's when real fear took hold... there was me and my young baby boy... it was certainly no accident now.... i really thought that World War 3 had just started.... i felt so guilty for my child... he was just a few months old and the world had gone mad....
i watched the news in horror that day.... i watched as people jumped to their death, i watched as both towers fell... i may not have been there... but i felt those peoples pain...and i cried....
things really did change after 9/11... even over here in england, many thousands of miles away... over here, there never had really been any problems with the muslim population... islamophobia certainly became apparent very soon after.... there were reports of muslims being attacked and mosques being defaced... even i began to look on muslims with suspicion... i just didn't... and still really don't understand how a religion that professes to be one of peace, could ever have its followers target people like that....
that day (9/11) changed me... i've never thought the same since....
